YANGON (Kyodo) A Japanese citizen was killed and another injured in a traffic accident in Myanmar, witnesses and official sources said Sunday.
Hideki Hasegawa, a dentist in his mid-40s, was killed when the car and its five passengers overturned about 170 km north of Yangon on the new Yangon-Naypyitaw highway around midnight Saturday. One of three Myanmar officials riding in the car was killed as well.

The accident happened because of sub-standard “highway” which was constructed with poor or zero standard specifications. Most likely the curves were too sharp for the superelevation and the speed allowed. The autobahn in Germany has gentle curves, no speed limit is imposed. Even during Hitler’s time the curves are designed for speeds of 160 Km/hr.
If the radius of the curve is too small then speeds need to be limited or superelevation (SE) needs to be increased.
Without a comprehensive review of the design and built quality of the “highway” more death will occur.
